Apple Forced to Open App Store Doors in Japan

Apple will allow alternative app stores and third-party payment systems in Japan to comply with the country’s new Mobile Software Competition Act. The move is not voluntary but driven by regulation, marking another major market where Apple’s App Store business faces pressure from anticompetition laws. Similar changes have already been required in the European Union under the Digital Markets Act, while U.S. courts have also pushed Apple to loosen control over in-app payments following Epic Games’ lawsuit. Apple argues that opening its ecosystem increases risks such as malware, fraud, and privacy issues. To address this, it has introduced a notarization process with Japanese regulators to protect users, especially children. Despite compliance, Apple has designed a complex fee structure to limit revenue losses.
