Disney Partners with OpenAI to Bring Iconic Characters to AI Video Creation
Disney has signed a three-year partnership with OpenAI that will allow its iconic characters to appear in AI-generated videos created with OpenAI’s Sora tool. As part of the deal, Disney is also making a US$1 billion equity investment in OpenAI. Sora, launched in September, enables users to create short videos from text prompts. Under the agreement, users can access more than 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars, including Mickey Mouse, Simba, Elsa, Toy Story characters, and illustrated versions of Marvel and Lucasfilm heroes. These characters will also be available through ChatGPT Images. Disney emphasized that the deal does not include real actor likenesses or voices. CEO Bob Iger said the partnership will responsibly expand Disney’s storytelling through generative AI. Disney will also become a major OpenAI customer, using its APIs to build new products and experiences, including for Disney+.
