Musk Pushes to Turn X into Global ‘WeChat++’

Elon Musk says he aims to transform X into a “WeChat++” super app by combining social, payment and digital-service functions. Speaking on the People by WTF podcast, he praised WeChat’s broad utility in China, where users rely on it for messaging, payments and mini-program services, noting no equivalent exists globally. Musk has long wanted X, formerly Twitter, to mirror WeChat’s scale, calling it a potential financial “clearing house”. X has already partnered with Visa to roll out “X Money” for peer-to-peer payments and bank transfers later this year. The platform has also added audio and video calls, with Musk predicting real-time video and AI will dominate online communication. With about 600 million monthly users—mainly text-focused—Musk sees significant room to broaden X’s audience.
