Meta Prevails in Antitrust Trial: Not a Monopoly, Says Judge
Meta

After a five – year legal battle, Meta has won an antitrust lawsuit brought by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC sued Meta over its acquisitions of Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion and WhatsApp in 2014 for $19 billion. On Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg ruled that the FTC failed to prove Meta was violating antitrust law with these acquisitions. Although the FTC presented evidence that Meta (then Facebook) was worried about Instagram’s rapid growth and potential competition – as seen in Mark Zuckerberg’s 2012 email about “buying time” – the judge focused on whether Meta is a monopoly currently.
