China-Japan Tensions Hit Investor Confidence
Chinese investors have lost nearly US$55 million in Japan-focused ETFs as political tensions surge after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Taiwan comments. Five mainland-listed ETFs tracking the Nikkei and Topix fell about 5% in two weeks, reflecting worries over Japan’s economy as inflation rises and China issues punitive actions, including a seafood import ban and a travel warning. The dispute also pressured Japanese stocks with major China exposure, such as Shiseido. Analysts warn that reduced Chinese tourism could significantly hurt Japan’s service sector and supply chains, though some asset managers remain optimistic due to ongoing corporate reforms.
