Singapore Tightens Rules on Online Safety

Singapore has passed the Online Safety (Relief and Accountability) Bill (OSRA), giving authorities stronger powers to order social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook to remove harmful content such as sexual abuse or cyberbullying. Non-compliance could lead to criminal penalties or app bans.Minister Josephine Teo said rising online harm has eroded standards of digital behavior and called for cooperation from tech firms and communities. The law follows Singapore’s increasing scrutiny of online platforms—Meta was recently told to address scam ads, while Google will introduce age checks to protect minors. Parliament also approved caning penalties for scam syndicate members.
