OpenAI’s AI video app Sora has made an impressive entrance on Android. On its first day in the Google Play Store, the app drew an estimated 470,000 downloads, according to Appfigures. This is more than four times the size of its iOS day-one launch — though the comparison isn’t entirely equal.

When Sora debuted on iOS, it was invite-only and limited to the U.S. and Canada. On Android, however, the app arrived in seven regions — the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam — and the invite requirement was already dropped in major markets. This wider availability naturally boosted the download surge.

Despite its earlier exclusivity, Sora became an instant hit on iOS. It surpassed one million installs within a week, quickly rising to the top of the App Store. Even now, it remains No. 4 on the U.S. App Store’s Top Free Apps list, showing sustained user interest.

Sora allows users to create AI-generated videos from simple prompts, and includes a feature called Cameos, which lets users animate themselves or friends. The app presents these creations in a vertical, TikTok-style feed, making it easy to explore what others are producing.

Appfigures also updated its original estimates for iOS day-one performance. Initial numbers suggested around 56,000 downloads, but newer models point to a more accurate figure of 110,000, with about 69,300 from U.S. users.

In contrast, Android’s day-one saw roughly 296,000 U.S. installs, suggesting that user enthusiasm for AI video creation remains strong even after the initial hype from the iOS launch.

Sora now enters a growing competitive landscape, with Meta AI also releasing its mobile app to European users after its earlier U.S. rollout. As more AI tools compete for user attention, Sora’s rapid adoption indicates that demand for creative AI-powered video apps is only accelerating.
