VW pushes deeper into China’s chip race

Volkswagen will develop its own advanced semiconductors in China to power future autonomous vehicles, marking a major step in its “In China, for China” strategy. The project, through its joint venture Carizon with Horizon Robotics, aims to deliver a system-on-a-chip (SoC) within three to five years. VW China CEO Ralf Brandstätter said the move shows the firm’s ambition to master key technologies rather than just localize production. The chip will process data from cameras and sensors, offering 500–700 TOPS of computing power—close to Nvidia’s cutting-edge Thor processor—underscoring VW’s push to regain competitiveness in the world’s largest car market.
