BMW is joining forces with Toyota to launch the iX5 Hydrogen SUV, marking BMW’s first hydrogen-powered model set for release in 2028. The iX5 will feature five powertrain options: EV, plug-in hybrid, gas, diesel, and hydrogen. Using BMW’s third-generation fuel cell system—co-developed with Toyota—the SUV promises greater efficiency, range, and performance. BMW is already building prototypes in Europe and helping expand hydrogen refueling networks across Germany and France. Yet, despite industry skepticism and slow sales—only 4,102 fuel cell vehicles were sold globally in early 2025—BMW sees hydrogen as key to decarbonization and future mobility diversification.
