US analytics firm SAS Institute has ended its direct business operations in mainland China after 25 years, laying off around 400 employees. The decision comes amid rising local competition and geopolitical tensions. According to employees, SAS informed staff through email and a brief video call, citing “organizational optimization.”The company said it will maintain a presence through third-party partners, aligning with its global restructuring for “long-term sustainability.” Affected workers were offered compensation including one month’s pay per service year, two extra months’ salary, and annual bonuses. SAS, once ranked among China’s top employers for 17 consecutive years, is expected to issue an official statement next week.
