The U.S. and Australia have signed a $3 billion deal to boost critical minerals production, aiming to reduce reliance on China. Over the next six months, both countries will fund projects worth $8.5 billion in total. The U.S. Defense Department will also invest in a gallium refinery in Western Australia, producing up to 100 tons annually—far exceeding current U.S. imports. Gallium is crucial for electronics, LEDs, and defense technologies. At the same time, Australia will purchase $1.2 billion worth of autonomous underwater vehicles from U.S. defense firm Anduril, enhancing its naval capabilities and deepening strategic cooperation with Washington.
