Fake “Sora” Apps Slip Past Apple Review, Raking in Thousands

After OpenAI’s invite-only video app Sora launched, Apple’s App Store was flooded with copycat apps claiming to be “Sora” or “Sora 2.” Many passed Apple’s review process despite using OpenAI’s trademarked name. According to Appfigures, over a dozen fake apps appeared, gaining 300,000 total downloads and earning more than $160,000. The biggest, “Sora 2 – AI Video Generator,” alone drew over 50,000 installs. While Apple later removed many, some still remain, such as “PetReels — Sora for Pets.” The incident raises questions about App Store review flaws and how scammers can exploit viral AI tools before official apps gain traction.
