China’s State Car Giants Turn to Local Tech in EV Battle
China’s state-owned automakers such as FAW and SAIC are partnering with domestic firms to win back ground in the fast-growing EV sector. Once dependent on foreign brands, they are now adopting home-grown technologies like autonomous driving and digital cockpit systems. As young buyers lose interest in foreign marques, state-run players are racing to keep pace with private rivals like BYD and Geely. Industry data shows that only four state-backed groups rank among China’s top 10 EV makers this year, highlighting the urgency for these traditional giants to modernize and embrace local innovation.
