JD.com Reportedly Acquires 70% Stake in Hong Kong’s Kai Bo Grocery Chain
Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com is said to have bought a 70% stake in Hong Kong’s Kai Bo Food Supermarket for HK$4 billion (US$509 million), including the grocer’s retail network and property assets, Hong Kong media HK01 reported, citing anonymous sources. However, a JD.com representative called the report “inaccurate” with a much lower actual price. The deal, agreed four months ago, allows Kai Bo’s founder and management to retain operational control for three years. Founded in 1991, Kai Bo has about 90 Hong Kong outlets and over 1,000 employees. Analysts view this as JD.com accelerating its global expansion.
