China is arming Burkina Faso and expanding its influence in the Sahel, filling the gap as the region’s security ties with the US and France falter. This supports Burkina Faso’s military modernization under junta leader Ibrahim Traoré, amid jihadist threats. Diplomatic ties, re-established in 2018 after a 1994 severance, enabled large-scale military cooperation. A 2024 deal with China North Industries Group began this, with at least four major arms consignments since early 2024, including recent VN22B vehicles and rocket systems.
