Shanghai’s Birth Subsidy Supports Female Researchers, Addresses Two National Priorities

To tackle China’s dual goals of building a “birth-friendly society” and strengthening its scientific talent pool, Shanghai launched the Keyan Return Plan. Initiated by the Shanghai Women’s Association for Science and Technology last week (per Jiefang Daily), it aids female researchers returning to work post-childbirth, easing the burden of balancing motherhood and research. The Shanghai branch of CAS is first to participate, with 20 new mothers getting a one-time 50,000-yuan (US$7,010) research grant—boosting both birth rates and scientific innovation.
