Xin Zhilei: From Poverty-Stricken Waitress to Venice Best Actress
China’s Xin Zhilei, recent winner of the Venice Film Festival’s Best Actress award, has a remarkable rags-to-riches story. Born in 1986 in Heigang, an underdeveloped city in Heilongjiang, her parents were manual workers, and the family struggled financially. As a secondary school student, she worked as a fast-food waitress to avoid asking her parents for money.
Later, she studied fashion design in Harbin and did part-time modeling to support her father, who was paralyzed in an accident. In 2005, her talent was discovered by Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen’s team at a local TV station event, leading her to sign with Yen’s company. After winning the Venice award on September 6, her story trended on mainland social media, with netizens praising her hard work. Donnie Yen also sent her a congratulatory message. Xin credits her childhood and family environment for shaping her personality, driving her success with “desire and ambition.”
