China‘s Golden Week: A Boon for Economy and Travel Industry

China is gearing up for a significant travel boom during the upcoming “golden week” holiday, which is expected to give a substantial boost to consumer spending. The eight-day holiday starting from October 1, combining the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, is seeing a remarkable increase in travel demand.

Early data from Chinese travel operators reveals a strong appetite for both domestic and international travel. Bookings for rail, flights, and car rentals are likely to outpace those of last year’s golden week. The railway authority announced that China’s railways are anticipated to handle about 219 million passenger trips from September 29 to October 10. In contrast, during last year’s travel rush, 177 million passenger trips were made over 10 days, with a peak of 21.4 million on October 1.

Tongcheng, an online travel agency, stated that domestic flight searches in early September were up 30% year-on-year, while ticket prices remained stable. Fliggy, another travel platform, also reported year-on-year growth in bookings for flights, trains, and car rentals. Notably, car rental bookings for multi-destination trips were up 93% compared to the same period last year.
