III—A New Home in the Woods
三、林中的新家
AT LAST Jessie opened her eyes.
杰西终于睁开了眼睛。
It was morning, but the sun was covered by clouds.
虽然是早晨，但太阳被云层遮住了。
She sat up and looked all around her, and then she looked at the sky.
她坐起身来环顾四周，然后抬头望向天空。
It seemed like night, for it was very dark.
天色非常昏暗，看起来就像夜晚一样。
Suddenly it began to thunder, and she saw that it was really going to rain.
突然雷声大作，她意识到真的要下雨了。
“What shall we do? Where shall we go?” thought Jessie.
“我们该怎么办？该去哪里躲雨呢？”杰西心想。
The wind was blowing more and more clouds across the sky, and the lightning was very near.
风把越来越多的云吹过天空，闪电也近在咫尺。
She walked a little way into the woods, looking for a place to go out of the rain.
她往树林里走了一小段路，想找个避雨的地方。
“Where shall we go?” she thought again.
“我们到底该去哪儿呢？”她再次思索着。
Then she saw something ahead of her in the woods. It was an old boxcar.
这时，她看到前方树林里有个东西，那是一节旧货车车厢。
“What a good house that will be in the rain!” she thought.
“下雨天躲在里面该多好啊！”她想道。
She ran over to the boxcar. There was no engine, and the track was old and rusty.
她跑向那节车厢。那里没有火车头，铁轨也已陈旧生锈。
It was covered with grass and bushes because it had not been used for a long time.
因为很久没有使用过，铁轨上长满了青草和灌木。
“It is a boxcar,” Jessie said. “We can get into it and stay until it stops raining.”
“这是一节货车车厢，”杰西说，“我们可以进去躲一躲，等雨停了再出来。”
She ran back as fast as she could to the other children. The sky was black, and the wind was blowing very hard.
她飞快地跑回其他孩子身边。此时天空漆黑一片，狂风呼啸。
“Hurry! Hurry!” cried Jessie. “I have found a good place! Hurry as fast as you can!”
“快点！快点！”杰西喊道，“我找到了一个好地方！大家快跑！”
Henry took Benny’s hand, and they all ran through the woods after Jessie.
亨利牵起本尼的手，大家一起跟着杰西穿过树林奔跑。
“It’s beginning to rain!” cried Henry.
“开始下雨了！”亨利喊道。
“We’ll soon be there,” Jessie shouted back. “It is not far. When we get there, you must help me open the door. It is heavy.”
“马上就到了，”杰西回头大喊，“不远了。到了之后你得帮我开门，门很重。”
The stump of a big tree stood under the door of the boxcar and was just right for a step.
车厢门下正好有一个大树桩，刚好可以当台阶用。
Jessie and Henry jumped up on the old dead stump and rolled back the heavy door of the car. Henry looked in.
杰西和亨利跳上那个枯死的老树桩，合力推开了沉重的车门。亨利朝里面看了看。
“There is nothing in here,” he said. “Come, Benny. We’ll help you up.”
“里面什么都没有，”他说，“来吧，本尼，我们拉你上来。”
Violet went in next, and, last of all, Jessie and Henry climbed in.
维奥莱特接着进去了，最后杰西和亨利也爬了进去。
They were just in time. How the wind did blow! They rolled the door shut, and then it really began to rain. Oh, how it did rain! It just rained and rained.
他们进得正是时候。外面的风刮得好猛啊！他们关上车门，大雨随即倾盆而下。哦，这雨下得可真大！雨水没完没了地下着。
The children could hear it on the top of the boxcar, but no rain came in.
孩子们能听到雨点敲打车顶的声音，但车厢里一滴雨也没漏进来。
“What a good place this is!” said Violet. “It is just like a warm little house with one room.”
“这个地方真好啊！”维奥莱特说，“简直就像一间温暖的小屋子。”
After awhile the rain and lightning and thunder stopped, and the wind did not blow so hard.
过了一会儿，雷雨和闪电都停了，风也不再那么猛烈了。
Then Henry opened the door and looked out. All the children looked out into the woods.
于是亨利打开门向外张望，所有的孩子也都朝树林里看去。
The sun was shining, but some water still fell from the trees. In front of the boxcar a pretty little brook ran over the rocks, with a waterfall in it.
阳光重新照耀大地，树叶上还滴落着水珠。车厢前有一条美丽的小溪在岩石间流淌，还形成了一道小瀑布。
“What a beautiful place!” said Violet.
“多美的地方啊！”维奥莱特感叹道。
“Henry!” cried Jessie. “Let’s live here!”
“亨利！”杰西叫道，“我们就住在这里吧！”
“Live here?” asked Henry.
“住在这里？”亨利问道。
“Yes! Why not?” said Jessie. “This boxcar is a fine little house. It is dry and warm in the rain.”
“是啊！为什么不行呢？”杰西说，“这节车厢是个很棒的小房子，下雨天既干燥又暖和。”
“We could wash in the brook,” said Violet.
“我们还可以在小溪里洗漱。”维奥莱特补充道。
“Please, Henry,” begged Jessie. “We could have the nicest little home here, and we could find some dishes, and make four beds and a table, and maybe chairs!”
“求你了，亨利，”杰西恳求道，“我们可以在这里建一个最温馨的小家，找些餐具，再做四张床、一张桌子，说不定还能做几把椅子呢！”
“No,” said Benny. “I don’t want to live here, Jessie.”
“不要，”本尼却说，“我不想住在这里，杰西。”
“Oh, dear, why not, Benny?” asked Jessie.
“哎呀，为什么呢，本尼？”杰西问。
“I’m afraid the engine will come and take us away,” answered Benny.
“我怕火车头会把我们带走。”本尼回答道。
Henry and Jessie laughed. “Oh, no, Benny,” said Henry. “The engine will never take this car away. It is an old, old car, and grass and bushes are growing all over the track.”
亨利和杰西都笑了。“哦，不会的，本尼，”亨利说，“火车头永远不会把这节车厢拖走的。它已经非常老旧了，而且铁轨上全长满了野草和灌木。”
“Then doesn’t the engine use this track any more?” asked Benny.
“那火车头不再使用这条轨道了吗？”本尼问。
“No, indeed,” said Henry. He was beginning to want to live in the boxcar, too.
“确实不用了，”亨利答道。他也开始觉得住在车厢里是个不错的主意了。
“We’ll stay here today, anyway.”
“无论如何，我们今天先住在这里吧。”
“Then can I have my dinner here?” asked Benny.
“那我可以在这里吃晚饭吗？”本尼问。
“Yes, you shall have dinner now,” said Henry.
“当然可以，你现在就可以吃。”亨利说。
So Jessie took out the last loaf of bread and cut it into four pieces, but it was very dry. Benny ate the bread, but soon he began to cry.
于是杰西拿出最后一块面包，切成四份，但面包已经非常干了。本尼吃了面包，可没过多久就哭了起来。
“I want some milk, too, Jessie,” he begged.
“我还想喝牛奶，杰西。”他哭着央求道。
“He ought to have milk,” said Henry. “I’ll go to the next town and get some.”
“他确实该喝点牛奶，”亨利说，“我去趟隔壁镇子买一些回来。”
But Henry did not want to start. He looked to see how much money he had. Then he stood thinking.
但亨利并不想立刻动身。他看了看自己还有多少钱，然后站在那里沉思起来。
At last he said, “I don’t want to leave you girls alone.”
最后他说：“我不想留下你们几个女孩单独在这儿。”
“Oh,” said Jessie, “we’ll be all right, Henry. We’ll have a surprise for you when you come back. You just wait and see!”
“噢，放心吧，”杰西说，“我们会照顾好自己的，亨利。等你回来的时候，我们会给你一个惊喜。你就等着瞧吧！”
“Good-by, Henry,” said Benny.
“再见，亨利。”本尼说道。
So Henry walked off through the woods.
于是亨利穿过树林出发了。
When he had gone, Jessie said, “Now, children, what do you think we are going to do? What do you think I saw over in the woods? I saw some blueberries!”
等他走后，杰西说：“好了，孩子们，猜猜我们接下来要做什么？你们猜我在树林那边看到了什么？我发现了一些蓝莓！”
“Oh, oh!” cried Benny. “I know what blueberries are. Can we have blueberries and milk, Jessie?”
“哦！哦！”本尼兴奋地叫道，“我知道蓝莓是什么。我们能配着牛奶一起吃吗，杰西？”
“Yes,” Jessie was beginning. But she suddenly stopped, for she heard a noise. Crack, crack, crack! Something was in the woods.
“当然……”杰西刚开口，却突然停住了，因为她听到了一阵声响。咔嚓、咔嚓、咔嚓！树林里似乎有什么东西。
