Archaeology Pioneer Admits Corruption Charges in China

Chinese archaeologist Liu Bin, known for discovering the 5,000-year-old Liangzhu ruins in Zhejiang, has pleaded guilty to bribery and embezzlement charges. The Liangzhu site, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, significantly reshaped understanding of early Chinese civilization. According to court proceedings in Zhejiang, Liu used his influential position between 2009 and 2021 to help certain organizations and individuals obtain contracts related to cultural relic protection and archaeological survey projects. He accepted the charges during a hearing on May 20. The case has drawn attention because of Liu’s prominent role in Chinese archaeology and his long involvement in the excavation and preservation of the Liangzhu ruins.
