China Moves to Rein in Food Delivery Price Wars
China has launched an investigation into intense competition among major food delivery platforms, including those run by Meituan, Alibaba, and JD.com, to curb damaging price wars. Regulators said excessive subsidies and cutthroat pricing have eroded profits, hurt the real economy, and added to deflationary pressure, as consumer prices ended 2025 flat year-on-year. The probe aims to ensure fair competition and promote reasonable pricing in the fast-growing instant retail sector, where goods are often delivered within an hour. Fierce rivalry has cost tech giants billions and pushed Meituan into its first quarterly loss since 2022. Both Meituan and Alibaba said they support the investigation and will cooperate fully.
