Contractor at Centre of Deadly Tai Po Fire Had Prior Safety Breaches
涉大埔致命大火的承建商曾多次违规
The contractor responsible for renovation work at the site of Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in decades had a history of safety violations. Prestige Construction & Engineering was twice convicted for safety offences during a Mid-Levels project in 2023, Labour Department records show. Despite this, the company later undertook renovation work at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, where a massive blaze burned for over 24 hours and spread across seven residential blocks, killing 83 people and leaving many missing. Authorities said Prestige currently has 11 other ongoing projects in private residential estates, all inspected by the Buildings Department with follow-up actions planned. Police have searched the firm’s office and arrested three men, including its two directors, on suspicion of manslaughter.
